Jane Sassaman
Jane is a versatile artist who draws inspiration from her diverse background in window dressing, sign making, illustration, and designing decorative accessories. In 1980, she ventured into quilting and since then, her vibrant quilt and fabric designs have gained global recognition. Influenced by 19th-century Arts and Crafts designers, Jane's work abstracts elements from nature while maintaining a contemporary graphic style.
As an art quilter, Jane's distinctive designs are known for their bold colors and graphic flair. Her quilt "Willow" was even recognized as one of the top hundred American quilts of the 20th century. Currently, she is channeling her unique vision into creating exuberant fabrics for FreeSpirit. Like her quilts, Jane's fabrics are inspired by nature, featuring large-scale designs bursting with lively colors. Some have even described them as "William Morris on anti-depressants."
Jane strives to capture the energy and mystery of the universe in her work, from the breathtaking beauty of a single blossom to the complexities of the human soul. She believes that well-designed objects can convey positive statements about their owners. When she's not immersed in fabric design, Jane can be found teaching quilt classes on her travels, sketching in the garden, or perusing her extensive collection of design books. She has also authored books such as "Patchwork Sassaman Style" and "The Quilted Garden," which showcase her work spanning two decades and offer exercises for creating nature-inspired quilts.
